Medallion Toolworks - Makers of fine quality handsaws
About our saws

Our saws are made to cut fast, straight and easy to start.  You will  find our saws comfortable to use because every tote is custom sized to fit your hand. No matter how large or small your hand is we will make one that fits perfectly. Guaranteed.  If you have a particular style of tote in mind, I will work with you to make one for you.

The starting stock is typically 15/16" thick and finished to approximately 0.90" thickness. For smaller hands, an appropriate thinner stock is used.
All totes are french polished with multiple coats. A finish coat of paste wax is applied and buffed out for prior to shipping.

All the backsaws are crafted with solid brass backs with a milled slot for the saw plate. The saw plates are high quality Swedish spring steel hardened and temptered to RC-48-52 hardness. The saws will remain useful for many years but can be hand sharpened when needed.  Each saw is assembled with high quality traditional brass split screws and a Medallion Toolworks signature medallion.

The teeth of each saw are shaped, sharpened  and  set by hand. The saw will cut fast and accurately.

The ordering process

The typical ordering process involves the following.

I usually ask the type(s) of wood you commonly use in your shop. For example, domestic hardwood and softwoods with the occassion exotic. Or it might be the opposite with primarily exotic hardwoods and some domestics. In either case, the tasks you would like the saw to perform and the wood types you most commonly use will determine the appropriate pitch (number of teeth per inch), rake and if applicable, fleam.

I will also request measurements of your hand. Please see the template here. I will email the template details and the points of measurement required.

The measurement between points AB determines the inside dimension of the tote. Points CD determines the outside dimension and EF determines the thickness of the grip front to back.

At your request, I will send you a prototype tote for your approval prior to making the actual one. You are welcome to mark up the prototype with any changes you would like and send it back or we can discuss the changes by telephone or email. If the prototype meets with your approval, it does not have to be returned.

Each tote is made to your specifications and the process will not begin until the details of the your saw are finalized and approved.
